Before spending the time and money applying for a green card, become familiar with some of the obstacles to getting one.  Getting a green card and becoming a permanent resident is all about timing, sequence and avoiding activities which will get in your way.

Here are five obstacles to getting a Green Card:

1)  No entry document

If you cross the border in to the U.S. without an entry document*, or with the assistance of a smuggler, your illegal presence may not be cured by marriage to a U.S. citizen.  If you apply for a green card after marriage without an entry document, you will receive a summons to appear in court for deportation (now called removal proceedings).

2)  Fraudulent marriage

When you submit paperwork for your green  card and are called for an interview, you will be asked to present details of your marriage. If it is discovered you are not living with your spouse or you are no longer married, you will not receive a green card.

3)  Proof of Marriage

Even if you have a real marriage, the officer interviewing you may not believe it.  You may not have facts to support it.  If this is the case, you will not get a green card.

4)  Arrest and felony convictions

Felony convictions and murder will prevent you from ever getting a green card.  If you have a very long arrest record for drug offenses, even though you have no convictions, you may be refused a green card because you are a drug abuser.

5)  Unauthorized employment

With some exceptions, unauthorized employment is a factor in granting a green card.
